چکیده

[1] First-order reversal curve (FORC) diagrams have become a standard tool in rock magnetism, yet magnetite is the only magnetic mineral that is well characterized using FORC diagrams. We present FORC diagrams for predominantly single-domain (SD) synthetic aluminous hematite (a-Fe2-xAlxO3) and goethite (a-(FeAl)OOH) and natural greigite (Fe3S4) and pyrrhotite (Fe7S8) to constrain interpretation of FORC diagrams from natural samples. Hematite and goethite have low spontaneous magnetizations and negligible magnetic interactions, while greigite and pyrrhotite have higher spontaneous magnetizations and can have strong magnetic interactions. The coercivity of hematite systematically increases with Al content only for samples produced using the same synthesis method, but it is variable for samples produced with different methods even for similar Al content. This precludes use of magnetic coercivity alone to quantify the Al content of natural hematites. Goethite has much higher coercivity than hematite for all measured samples. SD and superparamagnetic (SP) behavior is common in natural greigite samples, with peak coercivities ranging from 70 mT (SD) to zero (SP). This range overlaps with that of lower-coercivity minerals, which can make greigite identification ambiguous at room temperature. Fine-grained SD pyrrhotite has slightly higher coercivities than greigite, which progressively decreases with increasing grain size within the SD size range and overlaps the range for greigite. While FORC diagrams are useful for magnetic characterization, care is needed in interpretation because of overlaps in the broad range of magnetic properties, which result from variations in domain state, for any magnetic mineral with respect to other minerals.

Carbon–sulfur–iron relationships in sedimentary rocks from southwestern Taiwan: influence of geochemical environment on greigite and pyrrhotite formation

The importance of the magnetic iron sulfide minerals, greigite (Fe3S4) and pyrrhotite (Fe7S8), is often underappreciated in geochemical studies because they are metastable with respect to pyrite (FeS2). Based on magnetic properties and X-ray diffraction analysis, previous studies have reported widespread occurrences of these magnetic minerals along with magnetite (Fe3O4) in two thick Plio-Pleis...

Low-temperature magnetic properties of greigite (Fe3S4)

[1] We provide comprehensive low-temperature magnetic results for greigite (Fe3S4) across the spectrum from superparamagnetic (SP) to multidomain (MD) behavior. It is well known that greigite has no lowtemperature magnetic transitions, but we also document that it has strong domain-state dependence of magnetic properties at low temperatures. Blocking of SP grains and increasing thermal stabilit...

Stable Oxygen and Hydrogen Isotope Fractionation Factors for the Goethite (hematite)-water System

This paper reports experimental results on the low-temperature (<100 oC) 18O and  2H fractionation of goethite (hematite)-water in a closed system. Both goethite (-FeOOH) and hematite (-Fe2O3) exhibited closer fractionation factor values but the Hematite-Water value is slightly higher (~0.9932) than the Goethite-Water (~0.9924) for the 18O isotope. The average fractionation factor (1000ln...

Magnetic Properties of Fe49Co33Ni18Nanowire ArraysStudied by First-Order Reversal Curve Diagrams

Fe49Co33Ni18 nanowire arrays (175 nm in diameter and lengths ranging from 5 to 32μm) were fabricated into nanopores of hard-anodized aluminum oxide templates using pulsed ac electrodeposition technique. Hysteresis loop measurements indicated that increasing the length decreases coercivity and squareness values (from 274 Oe and 0.58 to200 Oe and 0.105, respective...

Heterogeneous Photodegradation of Pentachlorophenol and Iron Cycling with 1

10 Heterogeneous photodegradation of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in the goethite 11 (α-FeOOH) and hematite (α-Fe2O3) systems with oxalate under UVA illumination was 12 investigated. The PCP degradation, dechlorination and detoxification, in terms of 13 Microtox acute toxicity, were achieved to the higher efficiency in the hematite 14 suspension than in the goethite suspension. The optimal initial c...
